Understanding the Importance of Fencing Pliers

Fencing pliers are essential tools for any fencing job, whether you're repairing an existing fence or building a new one from scratch. In this guide, we'll walk you through how to use fencing pliers effectively, covering everything from basic techniques to advanced tips.

When it comes to fencing, having the right tools can make all the difference. Fencing pliers are multi-functional tools designed specifically for working with wire fencing. From cutting and gripping wire to stapling and splicing, these versatile pliers are a must-have for any fencing project.

In the realm of home improvement and DIY projects, fencing holds a special significance. It not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of your property but also plays a crucial role in security and safety. Therefore, mastering the use of fencing pliers is essential for ensuring the integrity and durability of your fence, which directly impacts your property's value and the safety of its occupants.

What Types of Fence Pliers Are There?

First, there are two main types of fencing pliers: End nippers and wire stretchers. End nippers are used for cutting through wire and hog rings, while wire stretchers are used to tighten loose sections of fence by stretching the existing wire. Both types of pliers have different shapes and sizes, so it's important to consider the size and type of fence you have before purchasing a pair.

When choosing your fencing pliers, it's also important to look for ones that have strong gripping power and durable construction. Consider getting a pair with cushioned handles for added comfort during use. And lastly, make sure the pliers have a cutting edge that can easily cut through tough wires or hog rings without dulling or breaking.

Using your fencing pliers properly is key to getting the most out of them and keeping your fence in tip-top shape. Always wear protective gear, such as gloves and safety glasses, when using fencing pliers to protect yourself from injury. And be sure to use a steady grip and apply even pressure when cutting or stretching wire to avoid mistakes or accidental damage to the fence.

How Do You Use Fence Pliers

The hammer head is used for knocking in staples to hold fencing wire to a post. D'you see the slots on either side of the pivot? They're wire cutters for different gauges of wire, open the handles, put the wire to be cut in the slot and then squeeze.

The spike can be driven under an old staple and then used to loosen it and then lever it out. At the top of the head in the middle are pincers that can be used for the same thing by gripping the staple and then rocking the head over.

That funny shaped slot above the pivot? It's for gripping different gauges of wire in order to tension them or to twist them to join wires. To tension a wire you part drive staples over the wire into the fencepost, grip the end of the wire near the post and then use the pliers against the post to lever and tension the wire. Once you have adequate tension then you use a second pair of pliers or a hammer to drive the staples home, holding the wire in tension.

To join two wires you take the end of one wire, bend it into a tight U shape and insert both legs of the U into the gripping slots. by twisting the pliers round you can wrap one end of the wire around the other making a very strong loop. You then slip the end of the wire to be joined through the first loop and back around before you twist it closed. You should end up with something like this.

Finally there is a texturised gripping surface at the top of the handles below the pivot. This can be used to grip wire for tensioning, squeeze the ends of loops together or just hold something in.

Fencing pliers have been around in one form or another for many many years and were probably one of the first multitools.

How to Choose Fencing Pliers

There are certain characteristics that are essential for a good set of fencing pliers:

High tensile cutting
Electric fencing wire is high tensile, making it far tougher than normal wire, and so will blunt any cutting edge that's not designed to handle it. Ensure your chosen tool is built to cut high tensile wire.

Combination pliers (cut and bend)
By choosing a combination plier that can both bend and cut, you'll save yourself from having to swap between tools while maintaining your fence. It allows you to work much more efficiently and saves you from carrying multiple tools around your land.

V-slotted jaw
When dealing with tough wire, you need a tool that can keep a solid grip on it while you're working on it. That's where a v-slot in the jaws comes in, as it increases the surface area of the contact point with the wire, improving the grip and helping you to use it with confidence.

Parallel jaws
Choosing pliers with parallel-action jaws will also increase the surface area of the contact point and ensure you have a solid grip for bending fencing wire.

Hardened cutting edges
Non-hardened cutting edges go blunt easily, making them useless. Choose a set of cutting pliers that have been hardened to hrc 62 and above for exceptional longevity.

Serrated jaws
Serrated jaw pliers will give you an even stronger grip on metal wire, helping you to control even the toughest of wire fences.

Compound lever action
A compound lever action multiples your hand force by many times more than traditional pliers, so you use less effort when cutting and gripping wire, meaning you can work for longer with less pain and discomfort.

Advanced Tips and Techniques of Fence Pliers

Now that you're familiar with the basics, let's explore some advanced tips and techniques to take your fencing game to the next level.

Proper maintenance

Like any tool, fencing pliers require regular maintenance to ensure optimal performance and longevity. Keep the jaws clean and lubricated to prevent rust and corrosion, and periodically check for any signs of wear or damage that may affect their functionality.

Choosing the right pliers for the job

Not all fencing pliers are created equal. Consider factors such as the type of fencing material you'll be working with, the size of the wire, and the specific features you need, such as a staple driver or wire cutter. Investing in a high-quality pair of pliers that meets your specific needs can make a world of difference in your fencing endeavors.

Practice makes perfect

As with any skill, mastering the use of fencing pliers takes practice. Take the time to familiarize yourself with the tool and experiment with different techniques to find what works best for you. Don't be afraid to make mistakes – they're all part of the learning process.
